چکیده

Total elemental analyses of biochars presents challenges during digestion because of biochars’ high chemical recalcitrance and widely varied composition. Three biochars were chosen with contrasting properties: corn stover pyrolyzed at 300 ◦C, oak wood at 600 ◦C, and poultry manure with sawdust at 600 ◦C. Recovery of phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) from poultry manure biochar was 10 to 100 times less with published wetor dry-digestion methods than when using improved methods. The published dry-digestion method returned significantly (P < 0.05) more sodium (Na), suggesting contamination from borosilicate glassware. A modified dry-ashing (MDA) method was the most precise method, demonstrating a relative standard deviation within 3.7% of the most precise method for recovery of P, K, S, Ca, Mg, and Zn from both corn and oak biochars. The MDA method is comparatively safe and effective for preparing biochar for elemental analysis.

Determination of thirteen common elements in food samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry: comparison of five digestion methods.

Five sample digestion procedures were evaluated for the determination of Al, B, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, S, Sr, and Zn in food samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The 5 procedures include dry ashing at 500 degrees C, wet digestion with HNO3-HClO4, microwave digestion with HNO3, microwave digestion with HNO3-H2O2, and microwave digestion with HNO3-H2O2-HF. Protein-bound Iodine, Total Iodine, and Butanol-extractable Iodine by Partial Automation.

0 VER the past several years, the measurement of protein-bound iodine (PBT) and butanol-extractable iodine (BET) has become quite popular in evaluating thyroid function. So great has the demand been for these determinations that some laboratories are performing hundreds of the assays per day. In view of these facts, it becomes obvious that automation should be utilized as much as possible to of...

Determining Total Mercury in Samples from the Persian Gulf and theCaspian Sea: Comparison of Dry Ash and Wet Extraction Mothods

Monitoring of mercury in environmental samples, with its proven toxicity on the food chain, requires sensitive and accurate analytical techniques. In this study, two methods for identification and quantification of total mercury in biological and sediment samples are compared: i) dry ash preparation and subsequent established procedures for Combustion Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, (AMA 254) ...

Arsenic and antimony determination in refined and unrefined table salts by means of hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry–comparison of sample decomposition and determination methods

An evaluation was made of different digestion methods for the determination of arsenic and antimony in table salt samples prior to hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometric analysis. Microwave acid digestion, classical wet digestion, dry ashing, and fusion were applied to the decomposition of salt samples and optimum conditions were investigated. Samples were decomposed by changing hea...

Dry- and wet-ashing techniques compared in analyses for zinc, copper, manganese, and iron in hair.

Preparation of hair specimens for trace-metal analyses is routinely done by wet- or dry-ashing. Wet-ashing is more time consuming than dry-ashing and can be dangerous. We wished to determine if dry-ashing was a suitable alternative to wet-ashing with HClO4:HNO3 or HNO3 alone in preparing hair for measurement of zinc, copper, iron, and manganese by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Concentrations ...
